What can we achieve?

• Find the best reconstructive strategy according to each individual patient
• Establish the best long-term treatment to recover as much function as possible in the extremity
• Repair acute nerve injuries and perform the necesary reconstructive procedures to treat sequelae from chronic injuries (or a combination of both) to get the best possible functional outcome.

Procedures

• Wound exploration and direct injury repair
• Nerve grafting
• Nerve transfer
• Tendon transfer
• Free functional muscle transfer (Innervated functional muscle free flaps)

Pain

Mild to moderate

Scars

Can vary from a single incision at the injury site to multiple scars on different parts of the body in more complex cases.

Incisions will be planned to ensure the best aesthetic and functional outcome possible.

Complex cases could require nerve grafting or free functional muscle transfer resulting in extra scaring on other parts of the body

Recovery

Simple cases usually require 2 weeks of splint immobilization followed by rehabilitation for a couple of months.

More than one surgery might be needed to achieve the best functional result possible.

Severe cases and those that didn’t receive adequate inicial treatment may require very long rehabilitation programs (years) before they achieve the best possible functional result.
